Bosh and Turkoglu meshing quickly

Bosh and Turkoglu meshing quicklyIt came seemingly out of nowhere, a quick, little over-the-shoulder touch pass in traffic in the paint and it would have surprised no one had it smacked an unaware teammate in the face and bounced out of bounds.

But Chris Bosh seemed to know it was coming, he took the 5-foot dish from Hedo Turkoglu and completed an uncontested layup, one of the best signs so far in the pre-season for the Raptors .

While all questions cannot be answered after one half of one pre-season game, the meshing of Turkoglu and Bosh seems to be coming along quite nicely.

Turkoglu, despite missing all three jump shots he took in the first half - a couple of them went horribly awry - made an otherwise solid Raptors debut Wednesday night as Toronto lost 106-90 to the Boston Celtics.

In 14 first-half minutes, all played alongside Bosh, Turkoglu went scoreless but dished out five assists, acting as the point forward that Toronto has never really had. He made all three shots he took it the third quarter, when Toronto let the game get away with some bad transition defence, and he finished with six points, five assists and a rebound in 21 minutes.

Bosh? He was the main beneficiary, scoring 20 of his 21 points in the opening two quarters, working at times seamlessly with his new teammate.

There were some glitches.

Turkoglu tried to thread a pass from the corner to Jose Calderon at the top of the key that was intercepted and taken for an uncontested Boston layup. And he committed a couple of other turnovers, but the overwhelming feeling was that it was a good debut.

"There was the touch pass and a pick-and-roll," Turkoglu said. "We talked before and during the game in timeouts. ... It'll take some time, but it's okay.

"I just have to feel more comfortable being out there with them and it'll really help me to figure out where they like to get the ball and pass it to them where they like to be and expect them to make them."

But while Turkoglu was all right, the night did hold some bad news for the Raptors , who lost Reggie Evans with a sprained left foot after just six minutes.

After getting tangled up going for a rebound, the veteran big man hobbled to the locker room, his night over. Officials said he would be examined in Toronto on Thursday.

The Celtics, who rested Rasheed Wallace, got 17 points from Paul Pierce and 16 from Kevin Garnett. Calderon had 12 for Toronto.

"I think we got a little glimpse of what they can do together," coach Jay Triano said of Bosh and Turkoglu. "The guys that haven't been playing or practising - he and Chris - hit a little bit of a wall in the third quarter.

"We kind of pushed the envelope a little bit by going with them, but with only three (pre-season) games left, they have to get used to playing together."

One thing the Raptors really don't need to worry about with the 30-year-old Turkoglu is his overall conditioning. He didn't look particularly winded during either of his first-half stints on the court, mostly because he's still got a lot of conditioning remaining from a busy summer of Basketball.

"We haven't gone for long enough periods of time without stopping it to find out where he is," Triano said of Turkoglu's conditioning. "It's been a couple of weeks where he hasn't done a whole lot, so we're going to monitor how he looks and how he feels out there but, honestly, I don't think Basketball-wise it'll be a problem.

"He wasn't out for an injury, he wasn't out because of something that was keeping him back other than just the fact that we want to keep him alive and fresh."

That sentiment certainly applies to Bosh. On two of Toronto's first three possessions, Turkoglu handled the ball at the elbow, with Bosh posted up on the block. When Turkoglu made an entry pass, Bosh was able to operate one-on-one because the Celtics weren't about to leave a good shooter like Turkoglu. And Bosh, covered one-on-one, either got fouled or made shots.

"It's always good when you can have a guy who hasn't really practised because of rest and everything and he comes right in and it's like he never missed a step," Bosh said.
