DRAFT PICKS:
J.R. Giddens, G, 6-5, New Mexico -- Celts like him for his defense. Could replace Tony Allen if Allen leaves as a free agent. Bill Walker, F, 6-6, Kansas State -- Might be a diamond in the rough if his knee problems are solved. Acquired in draft night deal for cash with Washington.
Semih Erden, C, 6-11, Turkey -- Tough inside player who has one year left on his Turkish League contract. A pick for the future.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Kevin Garnett for the regular season and Paul Pierce for the playoffs. Garnett established the defensive tone that gave the Celtics their foundation. He let it be known that one had to play defense to be one of the guys. Pierce then stepped up in the postseason, earning the Finals MVP and being the most consistent offensive threat. He also asked to guard Kobe Bryant for long stretches in the Finals and helped keep him from taking over.
MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER: Sam Cassell joined the team in late February and was expected to be the main backup to Rajon Rondo in the playoffs. But his shooting was off, and if he wasn't hitting he provided little else. He was eventually benched as Doc Rivers went back to Eddie House.
BIGGEST NEEDS: The Celtics would like to solidify the center position. Kendrick Perkins is still their guy, but he missed Game 5 of the Finals with a left shoulder problem that has dogged him in the past. Even assuming he is fine, they'd like to be more certain of who backs him up. Scot Pollard had the job before injuries got to him. Then veteran P.J. Brown came in late and was tremendous. But will he retire?
FREE AGENT FOCUS: James Posey is the key here. The Celts want to keep him, but if another club offers him four years at the full mid-level, he'll probably be gone. The team also wants to bring back Eddie House, but he might go somewhere for more assured minutes. Also free agents are P.J. Brown, Sam Cassell and Scot Pollard. Tony Allen is a restricted free agent.
PLAYER NOTES:
--F Paul Pierce was getting his right knee checked out further, but after the first exams there appeared to be no need for surgery or any other major procedure.
--F Kevin Garnett and G Ray Allen made a quick trip to New York to be on the "Late Show with David Letterman." They generally laughed their way through the segment.
--F Glen Davis was the hit of the victory parade, taking off his shirt and exposing his ample girth to the thousands who lined the route.
