In Doc Rivers' mind, a win over the Toronto Raptors didn't end the Boston Celtics' slump. Another one might change his outlook.
Looking for consecutive victories for the first time since Dec. 23, the Celtics (30-9) complete a home-and-home series on Monday night at the TD Banknorth Garden with the Raptors (16-22), who will play without two starters.Boston snapped a four-game losing streak with Sunday's 94-88 victory in Toronto as Ray Allen made eight 3-pointers and scored a season-high 36. But the Celtics nearly blew a 20-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, allowing the Raptors to get within five with 1:36 left before pulling away.
"There's no relief," said Rivers, whose team is 3-7 following a 27-2 start. "We could have played better and we know that. There was more good than bad by far but we want more good all the time."
Facing a short-handed Raptors team may bring relief to Rivers as Jose Calderon (strained right hamstring) and Jermaine O'Neal (sore right knee) did not make the trip to Boston.
While O'Neal will miss his eighth straight contest, Calderon played for the first time in four games on Sunday, scoring six points in 22 minutes.
"It was a little bit sore after the game," Calderon said of his hamstring. "I'm going to stay here and get treatment. It felt pretty good when I was on the court, so we'll keep working on it."
The status of two starters for the Celtics is unknown.
Boston could play without leading scorer Paul Pierce, who injured his right knee during a first-quarter collision with teammate Brian Scalabrine. He returned in the second quarter and played with a protective sleeve over the knee in the second half, but wasn't certain if he would go on Monday.
Pierce, who scored 11 points in 41 minutes, is averaging 21.5 points on 51.1 percent shooting over his last 10 games, and has averaged 19.2 points this season.
"We'll see how it feels after the plane ride and some rest and treatment," said Pierce, who hyperextended the same knee last month. "Hopefully it will get better overnight."
Starting center Kendrick Perkins also sat out Sunday with a strained left shoulder, but could return after a one-game absence. Perkins is averaging 8.8 points and 8.1 rebounds this season.
Raptors swingman Andrea Bargnani has continued to shine in place of O'Neal, scoring a team-high 17 on Sunday. Since entering the starting lineup on Dec. 31, the former No. 1 overall draft pick has averaged 21.0 points and 6.6 rebounds in seven games.
Will Solomon will likely start in place of Calderon, and has averaged 10.7 points and 7.3 assists in six starts this season.
In three meetings this season with the Raptors, Allen has scored 25.3 points per game, shot 61.5 percent from the field, hit 14 of his 24 3-point attempts and made all 14 free throws.
The Celtics have won seven of the past eight games with Toronto and all three this season. They have also taken three of the past four in Boston.
