By signing Rasheed Wallace, the Celtics acquired a versatile big man with the ability to cause matchup problems for opponents, as well as a combustible big mouth with the ability to cause problems for officials.

Though liked by teammates and regarded as a team player, Wallace has enjoyed a less harmonious relationship with referees. The 14-year veteran has consistently been among NBA leaders in technical fouls, including a league-record 41 in 2000-01.

Wallace's behavior was a driving force behind a '05 rule that results in a one-game suspension for a player who picks up his 16th technical of the season. Although that rule has caused Wallace to rein in the T's, he hasn't been afraid to voice his objections to what he considers poor officiating.

When the Celtics and his Pistons squared off in the 2008 playoffs, Wallace vehemently expressed opposition to the officials rewarding the C's for what he called ``flopping.''

``All that (expletive) calls they had out there . . . You saw them calls,'' Wallace said. ``The cats are flopping all over the floor, and they're calling that (expletive). That (expletive) ain't Basketball out there. It's all (expletive) entertainment. You all should know that (expletive). It's all (expletive) entertainment.''

Wallace's troubles with referees have extended beyond the court.

He had a bizarre encounter with Tim Donaghy - the now-disgraced ref serving prison time for betting on NBA games - after a 2003 contest. Upset about a technical Donaghy called on him, Wallace threatened him on the loading dock outside Portland's arena, resulting in a seven-game suspension.

Wallace's history hasn't been all negative, as he also has introduced a number of humorous quotes to the NBA lexicon. After a playoff game early in his career, Wallace conducted a memorable postgame press conference in which he answered every question with the refrain of, ``Both teams played hard.'' Wallace also has been know to exclaim, ``Ball don't lie!'' when an opponent misses a foul shot after what he deemed a questionable call. And Wallace expressed his lack of concern with trade rumors in 2003, saying he didn't care where he played as long as someone ``cut the check'' and paid him.

While general manager Danny Ainge and Co. are more concerned with what Wallace will bring to the team as a valuable sixth man, Celtics fans can count on the outspoken big man bringing equal value as an entertainer.
