LOWELL -- While no longer a hurricane, Tropical Storm Danny soaked New England and forced the Lowell Spinners to cancel yesterday's scheduled game at LeLacheur Park game against the Hudson Valley Renegades. There is no make-up date scheduled for the game.
The Spinners currently hold a four game lead over the Oneonta Tigers in the Stedler Division standings with nine games to play. Their magic number is seven. Oneonta is scheduled to host the Brooklyn Cyclones tonight in New York, while Lowell wraps up a six-game home stand with the first of a three-game series against Brooklyn tomorrow night at LeLacheur (game time is 5:05 p.m.).
The rainout is the first of the 2009 season for the Spinners, who had remarkably not been delayed or postponed through their first 34 home games despite rain on the day of or during the game on 26 of their home dates.
Any fans holding a ticket for last night's game may exchange that ticket in person for a ticket of equal or lesser value to any remaining 2009 regular season home game, or potential home playoff game, based on availability.
If a fan receives a lesser value ticket, the fan will receive the difference back in Spinners Dollars. Tickets can not be exchanged for Spinners Dollars unless all remaining tickets to the last three home games are sold.
For example: If the fan had an $8 ticket and exchanged it for a $5 seat then the fan will receive an additional $3 back in Spinners Dollars. Spinners Dollars can be used at concession and merchandise stands and will expire on December 31 of this year.
The Spinners ticket office is open Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. in person or by phone at 978-459-1702.
Last night's regularly-scheduled Extreme Blue the Frisbee Dog Bobble Head Giveaway has been pushed back to a potential home playoff game.
'Big Baby' will be in the house tonight
Recently signed to a contract extension with the Boston Celtics , Glen "Big Baby" Davis is celebrating with a trip to the Lowell Spinners as the guest of honor at this evening's Celtics Night game against Brooklyn.
Davis will participate in the between innings promotions, with autographed basketballs being tossed to fans, following a ceremonial first pitch.
Boston Celtics legend Jo-Jo White will also be in attendance as the Spinners honor the 17-time World Champion Celtics .
RIce, Pesky to receive honors from team
The Spinners will also celebrate the careers of a pair of Red Sox legends this week when they retire the Red Sox numbers of recent inductee to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Jim Rice and Mr. Red Sox, Johnny Pesky, on consecutive days to end the season: Tomorrow is Jim Rice Day and Tuesday is Johnny Pesky Day.
Both baseball legends will be on hand at LeLacheur Park for the festivities, where their numbers will be hung on the right field walls during in-game ceremonies during the Spinners games against the Brooklyn Cyclones. Each will throw out a ceremonial pitch following a tribute video prior to the start of the game.
Rice, who became the third straight Red Sox left fielder elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, following the footsteps of Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski before him, spent his entire 16-year playing career with the Red Sox.
The 1978 American League Most Valuable Player, Rice led the league that year in home runs (46), RBI (139), hits (213), triples (15) and slugging percentage (.600) in one of the most dominating seasons a player has ever had.
Pesky personifies what it is to be a member of the Boston Red Sox, as a true ambassador of both the game and the organization. One of the best to ever don a Red Sox uniform, Pesky retired after 10 seasons with a .307 lifetime average, better numbers than many shortstops enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
A former Red Sox manager, coach, broadcaster and player development staffer, Pesky is still in uniform, in the clubhouse and out on the field before every Red Sox game.
In addition to the Jim Rice ceremony Monday, the Spinners will also honor Billerica native and Spinners manager Gary DiSarcina with a Bobble Head Giveaway.
